The siting and building design reflect the historical influences of canneries, pitched-roof warehouses, and severe winter climatic conditions. The center has a spacious lobby with with displays of Southeast Alaska and totem poles representing the three Native American tribes of the area: the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. It houses exhibits on the rainforest ecosystem (the nation’s largest national forest), native cultures, and a children’s discovery area.
